[12 Days of 2012] Top 5 Male Solo Artists
Although we’re looking forward to what 2013 has in store, we can’t close out 2012 without looking back on the stars, dramas, movies and more that shined this year, so we’re launching a new series here at enewsWorld, called 12 Days of 2012, to round up and reflect on one exciting year in Korean entertainment.
We looked back on some of the boy bands that dominated 2012, and today, we’re looking at the men who took over the K-Pop scene (and, some, the world) all on their own.
Park Jung Min
When Park Jung Min wasn’t wooing the ladies in Japan as Romeo, the former SS501 member spent 2012 telling his K-Pop fans they were ‘Beautiful’ with his most recent solo single released last month.
Following in the footsteps of his former leader Kim Hyun Joong, Park Jung Min set out to break away from his idol image, and producing his latest album as well as taking part in developing the concept certainly marked a step in the right direction.
If his most recent fan signing event and concerts in Japan are any indication, we think 2012 is only the beginning for Park Jung Min.
Wooyoung
With 2PM fans getting restless with the idol group’s lack of promotions in Korea this year, it was member Wooyoung, who made his solo debut in July, to the rescue.
The 2PM member not only went blonde, he also boldly called out the sexy ladies with his single and
And with an award-winning body like his, the ladies definitely came a-running.
Kim Junsu
Whether it was movies or dramas, all of the JYJ members kept busy this year with various solo projects, but Kim Junsu chose to stick to music in 2012, and if the headlines are any indication, it’s a good thing he did.
From selling out concert tickets to crashing servers, Kim Junsu lived up to fans’ high expectations.
His solo album Xia – Tarantallegra became the best-selling album in Gaon Chart’s history. But the singer was full steam ahead, as he released another single album Uncommitted in August.
It's clear Kim Junsu put a spell on his fans with ‘Tarantallegra’, since his success in 2012 was by all means, magical.
G-Dragon
As if our heads weren’t already spinning from trying to keep up with G-Dragon’s ever changing hairstyle, G-Dragon really drove the fans wild with his most recent solo single Crayon.
G-Dragon knows how to get the people talking, but his music always speaks for itself, and his mini album, One of a Kind, was no exception, topping the music charts upon its release.
G-Dragon set out to make everyone ‘get their cray on,’ and we can’t think of anyone else who knows crazy like G-Dragon.
Psy
We can’t talk about male solo artists of 2012 or the year in music in general, for that matter, without mentioning Psy.
To say Psy was the man of the year in music would be an understatement. K-Pop stars have been steadily advancing into foreign music markets, but Psy literally cannon-balled onto the world music scene with monster hit Gangnam Style.
Some have argued that the success of K-Pop artists’ abroad is often hyped up, but when people all across the world and their mamas are doing the horse dance and shouting ‘Oppan, Gangnam style!’ there’s no way to talk Psy’s success down.
2012 was one crazy year, and it’s no wonder, when you consider the fact that Korea’s—and now, the world’s—number one psycho was its poster child.
